Maker Foundations: Only the beginning

We are about to come to the end of our first generation of Maker Foundations, and I don’t know where the time has gone! Since starting at the end of September, our youth have explored Game Development, Web Development, 3D Design & Fabrication, Graphic Design, Podcasting, Circuitry and many other tech based skill areas. They have created their own blogs & websites, mobile games, custom 3D printed designs, YouTube Channels, Podcast channels that are now in the iTunes store, and most importantly documented all of their amazing creations in a digital portfolio.

It’s been wonderful to see them navigate through the different topics and find those that speak most to them along the way. Just last week, all of the youth had the chance to come up with an individual project of their choosing and have been working tirelessly to prepare their projects for the Maker Showcase on Wednesday, December 18th. Come by from 6pm-8pm to view all their projects!

Maker Foundations is our entry level program for all that are new to the Tech Center. Now that these participants are nearing completion, all will have the chance to return back to the Tech Center as official Members in 2014. As members, they will have new and exciting opportunities to pursue advanced skills, complete independent projects of their choosing, acquire and distribute their first business cards, and will be eligible to participate in paid internships and jobs.

It’s an exciting time here at the Tech Center, and I couldn’t be more thrilled to not only see our first generation of Maker Foundation youth graduate and return as Members in 2014, but also to welcome the second generation of Maker Foundations youth in January 2014. Applications are now open!

The Winter/Spring 2014 Maker Foundations will be starting January 27th and will be running M-F 3-6pm on a flexible schedule for all youth participants. All will have the chance to not only independently navigate the many tech topics, but also choose the days that work best for them, while ideally coming twice a week.
