Last month (November 2013) Shawn and Stephanie Grimes our Directors of Technology and Curriculum respectively went up to Philadelphia to run a WebSlam in partnership with YouthBuild Charter School. YouthBuild Charter School is a non-profit that helps high school dropout students “earn their diplomas while learning vital job skills and providing valuable community services.” WebSlam is an intensive, one week long experience where students develop real-world skills in web development and then put those skills to work to help others. Through the aid of tech coaches and direct instruction, youth participants (irrespective of prior web development background) learn the basics of HTML, CSS, and PHP through developing for the WordPress platform. As a capstone to the week of learning, students solve the needs of actual clients and build websites in an intensive hackathon-style “WebSlam.” Many of the Youth who participated in the WebSlam Philly had little to no experience when it comes to web development or design but after a week of training with our curriculum that leverages lessons from Codeacademy, students were confident enough to handle a client who needed a website. Check out the video above that recaps a little of what went down that week!
